I tried opening my eyes tiringly and saw two individuals
sitting in front of me with their backs toward me. My head was also over a soft
pillow. I opened my eyes even more and realized the people sitting on the chair
were Mapalla and Trigman and the pillow I was laying on was Kyo’s lap. She was
sitting on the sofa while I was dosing off in her lap. My chest was warm, but
my legs were chilly.
I looked up at Kyo and she was smiling while she caressed my
cheek. She was humming the tune of a folk song. It was the song she always sang
to calm my nerves, so I felt even more relaxed. I started picking myself up to
sit besides her, but she resisted and pushed my head back into her lap.
“Rest a little more. We may have a long night on our hands.”
“Kyo, why are my legs cold? And what do you mean by a long
night?”
Mapalla and Trigman heard my voice and turned around to face
me.
“I removed your pants and panties, but I could not find a
different pair for you. So, I grabbed a sheet to cover them. These two were
rubbing your feet to keep you warm.” Kyo explained as she looked at them both.
I thanked them both and asked Kyo about the long night
statement.
“After we rushed in the room to get you, we laid you on the
sofa. I removed your pants and concluded you needed to be cleaned up. Trigman
had also got his jaw injured. So I dashed outside to get some water and clean
cloth for you and some ice for him. There, I came cross P.A., who was fuming
with, I guess, emotions. Before she could spot me, Ms. Herman came from behind
and told her she was needed on the stage. After P.A. walked away, she turned
towards me and said, ‘I don’t know what is going on, but please, rest in P.A.’s
room until she comes back. It will take her around an hour to perform. Then, we
can indulge in the discussion.’ And left. It was like she told us not to leave
before we all had a talk.”
I picked myself up and sat besides Kyo.
“How long have I been out?”
“A little more than 30 minutes.”
“Kyo, do me a favor
and get me a beer please.”
She hesitated at first but stepped outside to look for a beer.
I looked at Trigman’s face, who was wearing a black eye.
I chuckled a little and asked him, “Nice monocle, dude.”
“Kill the jokes. I am not in the mood. But we kinda heard
what was going on.” He took a pause and questioned me,” So, what are we going
to do, Mad?”
“I know her. I know how to press her buttons. I will get her
forgiveness, one way or another.”
“But it wont work, angel. We need her to truly forgive you.”
Mapalla chimed in. he knew what I was going to say next.
That was exactly what I said next.
“Shut it soul guru. I want her forgiveness. I will abide by
her desires for only so long.”
I took a brief pause, and continues to speak, “I have worked
to the bone to make my current life the best moments of my life. I won’t let
the devils of yesterday overshadow my angel of present. Mapalla, you said I
need her forgiveness, right? Either she will do that in peace, or I will take
it by force.”
“You have completely lost your mind. You know human
conscience doesn’t work like that.”
“But my mind does. I never said I wanted a heartfelt forgiveness
and be hunky-dory with her. If luck was on my side, I would prefer never to
meet her. Or any of them for the matter of fact.”
“Even if you were in the wrong?”
“Zip it Mapalla. I did what I had to do for my survival.”
“And if you are so badass, why are you desperate to please
Kyo.”
I was gritting my teeth, because I knew where Mapalla was
going next.
“Just like everyone, Kiyomi is also a person you can use,
right.”
He went there.
Suddenly, I was on my feet. The sheet covering me landed on
the ground and the dry air met my exposed legs.
Trigman was also standing and signalled me to sit down. I
didn’t want another slap across my face,so
I threw myself back on the sofa.
There was silence in the room.
“……..”
“…………..”
“………………….”
“So, what should I do now?” I was desperate, and the two
people I trusted more than me were present there. This was the best opportunity
to ask them.
“Do what you want to do, as long as there is no blood.”
Trigman suggested.
“No Blood, huh. So, broken heats will do, right?”
“I didn’t-” our interaction got interrupted because of the
crowd outside. They were shouting
‘ENCORE ENCORE ENCORE’ again and again, which
meant there was only one song left to be played in Priscilla’s set. I picked
the sheet laying on my feet and covered my legs before I had to answer million
questions to Kyo.
P.A. spoke into the mic, but we were able to listen as well.
“Thank you all for showing me love and enduring this harsh
weather for our sakes. Everyone is P.A. camp saluted the audience for making us
feel good. But it is not fair of me to keep the stage to myself because I have
some talented people to accompany me. Please shower them with as much love if
not more as you give me. I will be back to cap the show off, so until then
enjoy the latest track of my album ‘Lewd and Loud’ and let your hearts sing.”
The thumping beat was back again, and we resumed our talk.
“Priscilla will be back, and will have some questions for
me. I am appointing you both to take Kyo and go home if situations go south. I
will meet you after the show.”
Mapalla and Trigman opened their mouths in disagreement, but
Kyo entered the room at the same moment. They decided not to say anything in
front of her.
Kyo handed me the bottle of Thunderbolt and gave a glass of
whiskey with ice to Trigman to chill his eye. He took a sip and put the cold
glass on his eye. I put my lips on the bottle and downed half a litre of beer
in single gulp.
She came next to me and asked, “So, Mad, what are we going
to do?”
I separated my lips from the bottle and closed my eyes.
The similarities between her and Trigman’s psyche was
absurd.
“Well, we are here to
meet her, right? When she comes in, we talk to her. If she has something to
say, we will listen. If she has any demands, we will fulfill it the best we
can.”
I wanted somebody to reply or retort. Crack a joke, for
god’s sake. But what we got was a silence.
Everyone just fell short of replies.
The silence in the room was filled with the song P.A. was
singing. It had a melody I was well aware of. The words hadn’t changed much
ever since I penned them. There were sliding whistles in the song. That was not
my idea, maybe someone played around with the track. The song was in its third
verse, and I was listening it carefully because it was not penned by me.
I was able to listen the most of it and couldn’t help but
smile at the end. It had the same effect on me as that of Kyo’s lullaby. Oddly
Satisfying. Very calming.
The song ended, and P.A. gave her closing statement.
I prepared myself to face the music; or face the musician.
My shitty jokes can’t wait.
P.A.’s set was done and everyone sitting in the room got
careful to what was about to come.
The clapping of the crowd signalled that P.A. stepped down
and the hooting indicated the other artist had taken over.
The crowd was going nuts in the background. And yet, I could
feel the heavy footsteps leading towards the room we populated. It was cold,
downright bone chilling with no fabric wrapping my legs, and yet my body wanted
to break a sweat.
*THUMP* *THUMP*
*THUMP* *THUMP*
Was it only the footsteps I was hearing, or the stage was
moving too?
Was I hearing the footsteps, or only felt like it?
I was in the middle of going mad over these thoughts when
the door flung open and I snapped my eyes open. Three figures stood on the
other side. Clad in all black, it was Priscilla in the middle. On the right was
a slightly older lady wearing a traditional red saaree and matching maroon
blouse was her manager Herman. On the left was the person who I will eventually
strangle, Cline.
Back to the celebrity, Priscilla was seething with emotions.
She has her nerves popping on the side of her forehead. Everyone stood up when
she stepped inside the room except me.
Kyo pulled me by the arm, but I refused to stand up and
shrugged her off. Priscilla walked up to me and grabbed me by the jacket
collar. She lifted me up while staring in my eyes angrily. The sheet covering
my legs fell on the ground yet again. I stared back at her, which definately
pissed her off more.
I still had the beer bottle in my hand and took a sip out of
it while maintaining the eye contact. She widened her eyes in anger and cocked
her arm back to punch me in the face.
I thought to myself: why is nobody stopping her? Not her
staff. Not my friends.
Whatever.
I flung my arm which held the beer bottle and smashed the
bottle against the wall behind her.
The glass broke into million pieces and spread all over the
sofa. I didn’t let the neck and remaining piece of broken bottle go off.
Priscilla understood I was not playing nice. I was
manhandled by her, and she did get a leg up on me once. But this broken bottle
in my hand implied clearly that I was ready to do something really stupid to
her in case she does not calm down.
She brought the hand she wanted to much me with to my collar
and held me with both of her hands.
“What the fuck do you think you are doing? You think you can
attack me and walk off safely out from here?”
“I am with my family and friends. Right now, if I smash this
broken bottle in your head, it would be in self-defense. Don’t forget,
superstar, you may be street smart, but I am born and brought up in it.” I
replied in a dry tone.
“We are not the street anymore.” Priscilla was ready to pop
any moment.
“Even the more reason to teach your dumbass the rules of the
street.”
“Whatever you taught me was garbage.”
“You didn’t seem to mind when that earned you bread, bitch.”
I said, smiling in her face.
“I don’t roll with the street rats anymore.” Priscilla was
speaking from between her teeth.
“A slave of corporate should bow in front of king of the
streets.”
“Shut up, both of you.” Herman interrupted the conversation.
Both of us looked at her, while she continued speaking,
“Madonna. Priscilla. There is something on your minds. Please, use your
respective words and not your fists to convey your feelings.”
Priscilla let me go and walked out of the room.
Herman walked out behind her, while my crew stood around me.
Haaahh….
I let out a heavy breath and lost all strength in my legs,
crumbling on the ground once more.
“Mad!” Kyo started helping me stand. “What were you
thinking?”
“I was just playing dirty, I was actually terrified to face
her. By the way, what about you guys helping me out in these situations?”
“Eh? You didn’t see? Ms. Herman held my arm and Cline was
holding on to Mapalla and Trigman.”
I looked at both of them and they nodded to Kyo’s statement.
I let the broken bottle neck go and grabbed onto Kyo’s
extended arm. As I was climbing up, Cline came to the door and announced, “P.A.
and Herman are waiting for you in BIG O’s room.”
We all started walking out the door when he added some more
detail, ”Only the ladies.”
“What should we do?” Mapalla asked.
Cline raised his hand and put it against his ear. “Can you
listen to the music? There is a concert going on outside. Go and enjoy. As for
you ladies, you have around two hours before P.A. wraps the show.”
Saying that, he walked out and we followed him. Mapalla and
Trigman decided to stick around but not interfere in our conversation. Cline
pointed to the second room on our right and went in the opposite direction.
I gulped and opened the door.
Priscilla was sitting with her feet on the glass table,
holding a can of beer. Herman was standing with a pair of pajamas in her hands.
She saw me enter the room and threw it at me.
“Wear it and sit on the sofa. And have a civil
conversation.” She looked at Priscilla. “Do you want me to be here?”
“Hmm? No. I will prefer to talk to them alone. How about you
bring me a can of beer every half an hour?”
“Sure.” Saying so, Herman went out and shut the door behind
her.
Guess nothing is left except talking.
Kyo started speaking first. “Hi, my name is Kiyomi Anicrow.
Its an honour to meet you.”
“Hello, My name is Priscilla Applewood. Most people know me
as P.A. But your friend there knows me by some other name. Ain’t that right,
Hitmaker?”
All I could do was avoid looking in her eyes.
“Call me by the name you gave me, Madonna. Go ahead.”
“Ah, actually, her memories came back recently, so that
minute detail might be little hazy in her mind.” Kyo chimed in before Priscilla
could pester me any further.
Hearing that, Priscilla was taken aback a little, and
started laughing hysterically.
“Ah HAHAHAHA. That is what you have told her this time,
Hitmaker. Always a jester, aren’t ya?”
Kyo looked at me and asked, “Mad, what is she talking
about?”
My eyes were getting moist.
“So-” Guess Priscilla was done laughing, “-what do you have
to say after such a long time?”
I looked up immediately and said, “I am here for apologizing
to you. Please forgive me. Forgive me, and I wont cause any trouble for you.”
“What was the first thing you did when you barged in my
green room? You made some stupid move and made me react in an unpleasant way.
That forced me to go on the stage early. You ruined my lineup.”
“I-I’m sorry for that too, but please forgive me for the
past, and-”
“Shut up for a second and let me ask, what is you ladies’
relationship? Close friends? Friends with benefits?”
“We’re married.” Kyo said excitingly.
Priscilla squinted her eyes at this and looked at me again.
“You build another foundation on lies, didn’t you Mad?”
“No, I didn’t-”
“Alright, one more question for you pair of wives: why do
you want my apology.”
I had to calm down and spit the truth out. “The conscience
is a very heavy mental state. I want to make Kyo very happy, so I want to start
with a clean slate.”
Priscilla crunched the metal can in her hands when I said
that.
“Clean slate, you say? Seems like you have not told the
entire truth to the pretty lady. You said you got your memories back right.
Well, what better time to tell your wife the truth, Mad.”
“Yeah, please. I have been interested in knowing more about
you, and you have been putting it off for so long” Kyo was excited even more. I
could see her eyes glittering with anticipation.
I turned to face Priscilla. “I will tell her everything
tonight. Please, forgive me first so that we may cause you no problems any
further.”
“Count this as a condition, Hitmaker. You can screw the
story as much as you like and keep little Kiyomi in a loop. I want nothing but
facts out of your mouth.”
Suddenly, I felt like the ground slipped away from below me.
“My forgiveness comes with a price, and I pose two
conditions for it. One is for you to narrate the event of New York to little
Miss Kiyomi here. In my presence.”
I was completely defeated.
I looked at Kyo in her eyes and asked her if she loved me.
She took my hands in hers and kissed her.
I managed to give her a faint smile.
I exhaled couple of times and opened my eyes. "I will tell you a story of trust and betrayal. For two people in crossroads of love and life. What I am going to tell you is a part of the life I lived with Priscilla..."
