What are the long series to an Marathoner?
I am going to be honest. I got into anime seriously in June
2017, when I had a marathon of Attack on Titan. I had heard about it a lot, and
I wanted to give it a go. Before that, my anime knowledge consisted of Dragon Ball
Z/GT, Zatch Bell, YU-GI-OH, Pokemon, Doraemon, Ninja Hattori and Kochikame, and
I had watched only DBZ, Doraemon and Ninja Hattori out of it with a little bit
of Kochikame. All of them in my local dub, because I was a seven years old kid,
and subs are not famous with seven year olds. Fast forward twelve years, and my
friend mentioned he had Dragon ball Z/GT burned on his DVDs. I was like ‘Okay,
will watch some cartoons to relive my childhood.’
Boom. 200+ episodes later, I love it. I wanted to watch
more. But then five months after this I came to Canada [I live in Canada BTW].
Still no touch with anime.
I came to Canada in December, and in May, summer break came
around. 4 months of nothing but work. During this time, I joined a 24 hour gas
station. I would come home at 10 pm, fresh up and have dinner and lie on the
bed by 11. I would either play Need For Speed, or I would watch series like
Breaking Bad and The Newsroom. Then, one odd day, I clicked on the anime
website it had flashing on the top of the website. I clicked on it, and the
first series I saw on top was Attack on Titan Season 2. But to watch it, I had
to watch the first season, so I found it and clicked on it, and FUCK ME SIDEWAYS,
THIS IS SOME NEAT SHIT.
I watched it until 3 in the morning and then went to bed. I did
the same thing for five days and completed the series upto season 2. Months later,
I found out that the day I watched the last episode of Attack on Titan was the
day it aired. *Lucky Me*
So, anyone out there who had to wait for 4 years to watch
more Titan, I’m sorry about that.
I was done with Titan and wanted to watch more. I stumbled
upon Clannad and felt the feels everybody had already felt. I found Assassination
Classroom and cried when it ended. I came across a lot of series like Kanon (2006),
Death Note, Baccano! And Fate/Stay Night and ate them up immediately. But there
were also some shows like Fairy Tail, Gintama, Hunter X Hunter, FullMetal
Alchemist Brotherhood and Bleach which I avoided religiously. Not because I had
heard anything about them, but only for one factor: the number of episodes. Now
how hypocritical I was, let me tell you:
Assassination Classroom: 50 Episodes
Clannad: 49 Episodes + 1 Movie
Attack on Titan: 37 Episodes + AOT Junior High + 2 Recap
Movies
Death Note: 37 Episodes
F/SN and Kanon: 25-26 Episodes
These are the series with more than standard amount I saw on
the website; which was 12 episodes. Watching 25+ episodes was an achievement,
and I hunted for anime with that episode length. If the series had more than
one season, but with same episode length, it was fair game; as was the case
with Clannad and AssClass.
So, what is common in Fairy Tail, Gintama, HXH, FMA:B and
Bleach? They are 50+ episodes in a single season.
That, for me, was a very big commitment.
I am the guy who marathon. Don’t want to stop watching at an
odd episode of a series because my body needs food or sleep!
This is the theory of how I watch my anime. And why should I
not believe this self-made rule? Japanese anime studios do it, I must go with
the flow. They broke Overlord into digestive pieces, and I enjoyed the heck out
of the first 2 seasons. Breaking down the series into seasons is the new wave. This
was the only reason I could watch Monogatari franchise to a whole, which has 94
episodes and 3 movies or Shokugeki no Soma series, which includes 65+ episodes
and My Hero Academia with 60+ episodes and a movie.
So, the question is: would I continue to my watching
practice?
Probably not. I am missing out on good content and I know
it. Shows like Gintama and FMA:B are not the ones to ignore, but something in
the back of my head keeps saying ‘why commit to one series, when you can watch
so much more in the same time span?’ thanks to that, I have watched 150+ series
in 18 months. I don’t know if it’s something to feel proud of or not, but the
fact that I am immersed in anime is good enough for me.
Final Question: Should a marathoner adapt this strategy.
Yes, go for it. I know Gintama is awesome, but its legacy
stands at 300+ episodes and numerous movies. Same goes for the episode length
of Fairy tail and Bleach, but start with 12-24 episode length shows. Go watch
Clannad and follow it up by Angel Beats or Plastic Memories. Watch Attack on
Titan and back it up with Black Lagoon or Kill La Kill. Definitely watch Daily Lives
of Highschool Boys and follow it up with Cromartie High School and Kokoro Connect.
Then, delve into long running shows like Hunter X Hunter (2011) {That is what I
will be picking up, if I ever decide to do so} or Kochikame {Which I am definitely
picking up sometime in the future}.
